Convert/Import/Transcode Sony CX550V AVCHD to Avid DNxHD(*.MOV) for Avid Media Composer for Editing on Mac
Sony's flagship 2010 model, the HDR-CX550V, is a larger camcorder than its predecessor. With a $1049 price tag, the CX550 is also one of the cheaper high-end models on the market. The HDR-CX550V uses AVCHD compression for recording HD video. This model marks the first instance of Sony offering a 24Mbps bitrate for recording AVCHD video on a consumer camcorder.
For many mac users, loading 1920 * 1080, 24Mbps AVCHD videos to Avid Media Composer is just an easy job as Avid advertises it. Based on my personal experience, importing AVCHD videos generated by Sony CX550V to Avid Media Composer 5.0.3 creates strange artifacts. An ideal alternative for editing AVCHD directly on Avid is to find a tool for transcoding AVCHD mts/m2ts files to Avid DNxHD codec developed by Avid Technology. In this case, converted videos don’t have to be rendered any more which could save a huge of time.
Avid DNxHD, which stands for "Digital Nonlinear Extensible High Definition", is a lossy high-definition video post-production codec engineered for multi-generation compositing with reduced storage and bandwidth requirements. It is an implementation of SMPTE VC-3 standard and is comparable with Apple's ProRes 422 which uses similar bit rates and has the same purpose.
Aunsoft Video Converter for Mac is the best Mac AVCHD to Avid DNxHD (*.MOV) Converter which can convert Sony CX550V 1080i to Avid DNxHD (*.MOV) for further smooth editing in Avid Media Composer.
